50/50 Pledge

In October 2021, We Are Doc Women published its Factual Television Survey Report and a series of industry recommendations to promote gender equality. One of these, the 50/50 Pledge, asks broadcasters and production companies to ensure that half of their factual programmes are directed by women. Here are the names of those  that have committed to 50/50 so far.

“We are proud of our track record in commissioning of growing and developing the careers of talented women directors across our slates and with a range of initiatives including our New Directors initiative and the female shooters course partnering with Channel 4 and the NFTS. The BBC has led the way with its 50:50 commitment to increasing the representation of women across its content and we are working towards our bigger ambition across all factual of achieving 50:50 representation for directors in the next two years. We are therefore delighted to support the 50:50 Pledge and all it is doing to raise awareness and increase representation across the industry.”

BBC

“Signing up to the 50/50 gender parity pledge felt like a no-brainer and I’m pleased to say we are comfortably reaching it. It’s also been noticeable since we publicly announced our commitment how many more pitches we get with female PDs already attached.”

Channel 4

“We all need more films featuring female protagonists and contributors, and more films by brilliant female storytellers. Hiddenlight is 100% behind We Are Doc Women’s 50/50 pledge.”

HiddenLight Productions

“We wholeheartedly endorse this essential initiative.”

The Garden

"In an industry where there are too many structural barriers blocking women directors this is an important step in blowing them away. Rare TV supports this great initiative in recognition that, while progress has been made, there is so much further we rapidly need to go."

Rare TV

“Gold Star Productions supports the 50/50 pledge because women should be given the same opportunities and rewards as men. It’s not only the right thing to do it’s our legal responsibility.”

Gold Star Productions

“As a female led production business OSF is delighted to support the 50:50 pledge. Gender equality is a matter of fairness and storytelling through the female gaze will produce a richer creative experience for audiences.”

Oxford Scientific Films

“Signing up to the pledge was a very easy decision to make. Mindhouse already has 50/50 gender balance and pay equity in the make-up of our company directors so it made perfect sense to extend that principle to filmmaking. With so many incredibly talented female directors out there it's not a difficult choice! We'd encourage other independent production companies to do the same and offer this concrete commitment to true equity in the industry.”

Mindhouse

“Lambent has always enabled women to thrive and has championed female directors at every turn. We are a better company for that. Signing up to the pledge hasn’t changed the way we work – it’s underlined our commitment to female talent.

Why wouldn’t you sign up to a pledge that encourages a 50:50 commitment to ensure gender parity? We all need a fairer, more balanced, more representative mix of talent, and the industry can only benefit from that.”

Lambent Productions

"At Empress we completely support We Are Doc Women and their important work. As a female led company this is one of our founding principles. So far the majority of our projects have been directed by women and we commit to the 50/50 pledge."

Empress Films

“We are delighted to sign up to the We Are Doc Women 50:50 pledge – furthering our commitment to equality of opportunity at Brinkworth and across the television industry. Female directors have always been at the heart of Brinkworth’s returning series and award-winning work and we are excited to maintain and grow this tradition into the future.”

Brinkworth

“Arrow International Media is thrilled to be joining the We Are Doc Women 50:50 pledge and is fully committed to ensuring equal opportunities are available for everyone across our productions.  We recognise that by working towards a 50:50  gender split for Director roles, and by providing training and mentoring opportunities, we can truly contribute to the development of female Directors in our industry.”

Arrow Media

“Signing up to the pledge was an easy decision. I don’t want to live and work in a world where my gender is underrepresented. There are so many talented women in television and it’s mine, and Woodcut’s, goal to ensure they are given as many opportunities as possible along with the support to help them achieve brilliant things!

Woodcut Media

“We’re proud to have had so many great women directing films at Curious, and looking forward to working with many more in the years to come!”

Curious Films

"We are absolutely delighted to be part of this groundbreaking initiative. As a new company on the block, we know how important it is to take meaningful steps forward and do our bit to reshape our industry for the better. For We Are Doc Women, this is only the beginning, and we can't wait to see the diversity and inclusivity of the TV world improve at last."

Enderley Pictures

"We are proud to support We Are Doc Women with a shared ambition to promote gender equality in the industry."

72 Films

“Wall to Wall and Twenty Twenty are proud to be involved in this important initiative to support the growing pool of talented female directors in the UK.”

Wall to Wall

"If half of the UK population identify as women then why aren't half of our stories, and half of our history also being told by women. If not now, when?"

Glimmer Films

"Factory was founded a decade ago by Julie Heathcote and Lisa Fairbank, since then we have championed female talent both on-screen and behind the camera. 50/50 is the minimum representation we should be aiming for as an industry - and it's a target we normally exceed here at Factory."

Factory Films

“We are proud to have signed up to We Are Doc Women’s 50:50 pledge. This vital campaign is helping to make an essential change in the industry. We are currently working with incredible female directors, and we are committed to promoting even more talented women into directing roles.”

Dragonfly Film and TV

“Candour Productions is delighted to be supporting the We Are Doc Women Campaign. As a female led company where only two films in our entire history have been directed by men, we believe passionately in helping to support female directors and women at all senior levels with the production process.  We are so grateful to We Are Doc Women for working to make sure equality happens within our industry. Thank you!”
